THE FOLLOWIING ARTICLE BY GERRY GITTLESON IS REPRINTED HERE WITH HIS PERMISSION. IT APPEARED IN THE DAILY NEWS ON JANUARY 18, 2011.
In an all-star football showcase feaaturing so many talented participants on both sides, it was only fitting the game came down to the end.
The West nearly overcame a 14-point deficit over the final three minutes, scoring two late touchdowns including a 5-yard run by Oxnard's Terlell Watson with 1:19 remaining to pull within a point, but the East's Luke Reynolds of Hollywood broke up a pass on a two-point conversion attempt to seal a 21-20 victory for the East on Sunday before a crowd of about 4,500 in the 15th annual Daily News East-West All-Star Game at College of the Canyons.
On the deciding two-point conversion attempt a pass by Oaks Christian's Richie Harrington to Thousand Oak's Richard Mullaney was broken up in the end zone by Reynolds who celebrated like he just won the Super Bowl.
"It feels great to save the win," Reynolds said. "I knew coming in that we played a lot of weak opponents at Hollywood, so this was my chance, and I reached out and made the play."
The win was the East's fourth in a row and fifth over the past six years in a series the
West leads 8-7.
Valencia's Steven Manfro was named game MVP after scoring all three touchdowns for the East on runs of 17 and 2 yards, and a 14 yard pass from Valencia's Alex Bishop.
"It was great to be out there on a whole new team. We practiced for two weeks and bonded really close and played as a team." Manfro said. " We were playing with a purpose today."
Manfro rushed for 56 yards on 13 carries and had four receptions for 44 yards in limited minutes, as both teams shuffled in a lot of players.
Watson scored all three touchdowns for the West, including a 72-yard run on the first play of the second half, finishing with 114 yards on 14 carries."It was great to be out there playing football again. I've missed it, "Watson said. "On the long touchdown run, I was looking to cut back, and I got some great blocks up front and some great blocks downfield."
J.J. Sabitine of Notre Dame had three fumble recoveries and was named East MVP. Alemany's Akeem Gonzales added two sacks, as the East forced four turnovers and escaped with the win despite totaling just 34 yard in the second half and being outgained 402-279.
The West had one last chance with the ball at midfield with on second left, but a Hail Mary pass by Grace Brethren's Max Leffler intended for Mullaney was knocked down by
Muir's Aaron Simpson.
Harrington completed 22 of 38 passes for 274 yards and an interception. Mullaney had 6 catches for 78 yards, followd by Westlake's Casey Fry (five for 69) and Chaminade's Josh Yeager (four for 32)
West coach Jim Benkert of Westlake lost an all-star game for just the second time in 12 games. For East coach Kevin Rooney of Notre Dame, it wwas a satisfying victory after the Knights finshed
just 2-8 during the season and missed the playoffs for the first time in more than decade.
West quarter back Nick Isham of Westlake, expected to be a key impact player, arrived just before kickoff after returning from a weekend recruiting visit to New Mexico State,
and he opted not to participate.
Burrough's Lucas Yanez started at quarterback for the East. He completed 3 or 3 passes for 30 yards and added a 17 yard run on the opening drive before taking a hit to the chin and suffering a grade-two concussion, he did not return. "I play in the Pacific League, and I'm not used to taking such hard hits," Yanez said. "I don't even remember what happened."
Alemany's Vernon Adams completed 5 of 7 passes for 71 yards for the East, and he added 32 yards rushing on eight carries. Bishop was 5 of 10 for 55 yards and a touchdown.

THE STARS WILL SHINE ONE MORE TIME!!!!
And once again, The Valley Youth Conference is proud to sponsor the annual Daily News High School All Star Game. The game provides an opportunity for the area's outstanding graduating seniors to play in what will be their final interscholastic football game. Some of them are moving on to play at the next level, several others could be playing their last football game. Regardless of their next step this game brings out the competitive juices and provides wonderful moments and very often some high drama.
Without question, this is the San Fernando Valley's premier event for prep football, as the top players from The Valley and several neighboring communities come together for one last chance to represent themselves, their schools and their community.
Without youngsters there would be no competition and without adult volunteers there would be no Conference. The countless hours contributed by hundreds of volunteers - such as those who have made this game possible - serve an even higher goal than scoring touchdowns. While teaching the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, the volunteer coaches, team moms, team managers, club presidents and conference administrators are providing the more vital fundamentals of life. Boys and girls in the Valley Youth Conference are exposed to the need and benefits of discipline, sacrifice, responsibility and team work. Lessons that last a lifetime and prepare them for their chosen endeavors, on or off the field. Our grateful thanks to each and every one of these volunteers.
We know that friends and family will be in attendance, we would like to invite all the members of all the Conference clubs to The Game. Watching these young men is always a heart warming experience. Their effort on the field and in the classroom that allow them to be included in this game is an inspiration to all of us.
Remember, before the High School game is played there will be two other games, our National and American League Midget and Pee Wee All Stars will be playing what will most certainly be a
couple of exciting games.
Join us for the day, cheer them on, and remember there are no losers out there.
